I had my first therapy session ever today with Katharine. The call started professionally but turned sour really quickly. I spoke about being anxious from work, burned out from the grind and how it was seeping into my daily life. She asked two questions which I didn’t have a good enough answer to and she abruptly ended the call stating if I didn’t want to answer her questions she couldn’t help me. I responded by telling her it wasn’t that I just didn’t really know. She then cut me off and told me I was seeking FML leave and she didn’t write that nor write a letter for a support dog. (I wasn’t asking nor did I reference those two things). She then told me I might need family therapy if I was yelling at my kids. She 100% took something I told her and made a snarky comment right before she said bye and ended the call. I’m not even bad at her b/c I have to assume she’s been burned in the past but I emailed her and let her know that was not me. I’m leaving a review b/c for anyone having a hard to as it is putting yourself out there I suggest seeking someone else. In the end it’s her assumption and bedside manner that urges me to leave a poor review. I reported her to the app I was using and anywhere I can leave a comment I 100% will.
My boyfriend was apprehensive about counseling but finally agreed and made an appointment with Katharine. He has severe anxiety and OCD, so he logged on early to make sure everything was okay for his appointment. When his appointment started he experience technical difficulties and had to call support to figure it out. Katharine cancelled the appointment 7 minutes after it started and didn’t even bother to contact my boyfriend directly to see if he was having trouble logging in. She knew he logged in to the waiting room and acknowledged that in her super passive aggressive message about showing up on time. My boyfriend messaged her back right away explaining the situation and got no reply. He even scheduled an appointment for the next time slot so he can still be seen. Then Katharine didn’t even show up, even after all that talk about punctuality. My boyfriend is back to being closed off to therapy again. Thanks a lot Katherine. Find a new profession. Super unprofessional.
My experience with her was on online-therapy.com and it was awful. She was several minutes late to our session. About five minutes in, her phone started going off and it went off twice after this. I was opening up about a friendship that was giving me issues and the entire time I was speaking, I noticed she was typing on her computer and not giving me her full attention. She also asked me in a very condescending tone, "why are you focusing so much on other people during your session? Do you normally do this in session?" I was focusing on a friendship issue and was trying to give her background into my relationship considering this was the first time we were meeting. She did not listen to me at all. At the end of session, as I was telling her that I don't think she understood what I was saying and that I needed help, she spoke over me saying that we were not a good fit for each other. She did the peace sign with her hand as she hung up on me. Avoid her to better your mental health.
I met with Katharine over TalkSpace, a platform made to match you with a therapist virtually. I've been going to therapy for over 5 years and I'm actually currently in graduate school studying professional counseling. Never in my life have I ever been treated so coldly by a therapist. She established no rapport with me when we had our first session. I could virtually feel her annoyance, anger, and anxiety from the screen of my computer. This energy set the session off very poorly. When I asked what techniques she used, she redirected me to her bio to see the techniques and modalities of counseling she applies during sessions. Despite this being MY session (my very first session with her), she refused to explain to me what her approach to counseling was. She seemed annoyed that I was even asking this question. As someone who is studying counseling, I expect my therapist to be warm, inviting, and professional. Who knows how I could have been coming into that very first session. I could have been suicidal, upset, angry, etc. Thankfully, I am in a stable place, but if I had been in crisis mode, my experience with Katharine would have discouraged me. She eventually HUNG UP on me while I was talking with a peace sign and said "be well." I'm not sure where she got her accreditation from, but she seriously needs to look within herself and evaluate if she is actually creating a SAFE and EMPATHETIC place.
