My 5 year old son's pediatrician found a heart murmur and referred him to John Bass who diagnosed my son with an "innocent heart murmur". The only thing that John Bass did was listen to my son's heart with a stethoscope and said that if there was something wrong with his heart, he wouldn't be so big and healthy. Almost ten years later, my 6'3" 195lb 15 year old son suffered a stroke while at school. My son spent three days in the hospital where he endured a CT scan, 2 MRIs of his brain, an MRI of his neck and spine, an ultrasound and MRI of his heart, a lumbar puncture and countless blood draws. We took my son to Mayo Clinic where the cardiologist found a large atrial septal defect (20mm by 16 mm), a severely enlarged right atrium, a severely enlarged right ventricle and blood flowing the wrong direction which is most likely what cause the stroke. If John Bass would have done an ultrasound instead of diagnosing based on my son's appearance, the stroke could have been prevented and the ASD could have been repaired ten years ago.
