Mastectomy (Breast Removal Surgery)

Mastectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the breasts, most frequently associated with breast cancer treatment (for both male and female breast cancer patients). Breast cancer patients who receive a mastectomy typically have undergone other treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation, and less invasive breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy). If these treatments are unsuccessful, oncologists may eventually prescribe a mastectomy. Other conditions that may prompt a mastectomy include:

Two or more cancerous regions in the same breast
Inability to receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy
High likelihood of recurring breast cancer
Large tumor that is bigger than two inches across
Pregnancy that prohibits radiation therapy
Preexisting conditions like lupus or scleroderma

Notably, some patients may elect to undergo mastectomy without a breast cancer diagnosis. Preventative (prophylactic) mastectomy is performed on those with a high risk of breast cancer, such as having a family history of the disease or carrying the breast cancer BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. Preventative mastectomy substantially reduces one's chances of developing breast cancer in the future, but it cannot wholly prevent it.

Surgical oncologists perform several types of mastectomies, depending upon the severity of the breast cancer (including factors such as its location and spread), as well as the patients' own aesthetic and personal choices. The six main types of mastectomy include:

Total mastectomy, where the surgical oncologist removes an entire breast, including parts like the pectoral chest muscle, skin, and nipple.
Radical mastectomy, where the surgical oncologist removes the entire breast, underarm lymph nodes, pectoral chest muscles, and outer skin and nipple. One of the most invasive forms of mastectomy, radical mastectomy is infrequently performed.
Modified radical mastectomy, where the surgical oncologist completes a total mastectomy and also removes the underarm lymph nodes. This procedure is slightly less invasive than radical mastectomy.
Skin-sparing mastectomy, where the surgical oncologist removes cancerous breast tissue and nipple, but leaves most of breast skin. This method is used in conjunction with breast reconstruction, as implants can be added below the skin. Skin-sparing mastectomy often requires a treatment team with a surgical oncologist and a plastic surgeon experienced in breast procedures.
Nipple-sparing mastectomy, where the surgical oncologist removes cancerous breast tissue and leaves the nipple and most of the breast skin. This method is only available to patients in the early stages of breast cancer. Similar to skin-sparing mastectomy, this procedure is frequently performed with breast reconstruction.

Any of these procedures can be done on both breasts, in which case the procedure would be known as a double mastectomy. For example, a surgical oncologist might perform a total or nipple-sparing mastectomy on both breasts. Double mastectomies are often used as a preventive surgery for those who are at risk of developing breast cancer later on in life.

Patients have one or two days of hospital stay before returning home from their mastectomy procedures. Full recovery can take several months, but some patients find they are able to resume normal activity within one month of their mastectomy. Patients are advised to limit arm and chest movements whenever possible.

After surgery, patients must also adjust to changes in their appearance. While some patients choose to receive breast reconstruction, other patients may decide to wear prosthetic breasts or will simply embrace their new chest.

Mastectomies permit patients to conquer cancer and lead healthy, thriving lives as breast cancer survivors.

Skin Issues

The skin is the largest organ in the body, protecting and covering the more sensitive inner organs. Considering its size and that it is constantly exposed to the elements, the skin is usually relatively problem-free. However that doesn't mean that issues don't come up from time to time that might need the help of a professional. The most common skin issues that people seek medical help with are cosmetic issues, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin growths.

Professional cosmetic skin treatments exist to treat wrinkles, scars, dark spots, remove excess hair, tone and tighten skin, and otherwise improve the appearance of the skin. They may use lasers, light therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or many other forms of skin treatment.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, most commonly on the face or back. The clogged follicles can then become infected and inflamed. Treatments include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and retinoid creams.

Eczema is dry, sensitive skin that causes an itchy red rash, often in response to specific triggers. It is common in childhood but can sometimes last into adulthood. The main treatment involves keeping skin well moisturized.

Dermatitis is the medical name for any kind of skin inflammation or rash. Rashes can happen because of an allergy or contact with an irritating substance. They may be red, itchy, or even painful. They are often treated with antihistamines or moisturizing creams containing cortisone.

Psoriasis is patches of thick, red skin that is covered in silvery scales. It is often itchy and sore. Psoriasis is thought to be caused by an immune disorder, and it runs in families. Psoriasis is not contagious. There is no cure, but there are medicated creams available to treat the symptoms.

Skin growths, including warts and moles, are usually not serious. However, some skin growths should be examined by a doctor to make sure they don't cause problems in the future. Warts are harmless, rough, bumpy growths caused by a viral infection. They occur most often on the hands and feet. Because they are caused by a virus, they are contagious. Moles are brown or black spots that are sometimes raised slightly from the surface of the skin. They happen when clumps of pigment cells form in a cluster instead of spread out. Moles are harmless except that they are more vulnerable to cancer than other parts of the skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and its risk increases with sun exposure and fair skin tone.

Skin issues can be embarrassing or irritating, but most are minor and can be treated without serious problems. Some, however, can be a sign of a more significant issue, so it is important to see a doctor for anything out of the ordinary.

Stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when a blood vessel supplying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is ruptured or blocked. The brain cannot function without a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, so when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, even for a brief moment, brain cells begin to die. When a sufficient number of brain cells die, the brain itself can no longer function, meaning that strokes are very dangerous. Strokes can result in impaired movement, speech, cognitive ability, the impairment of important physical functions, and even death.

Anyone can have a stroke, regardless of age and health. Strokes are known to happen at random. However, certain conditions and behaviors can increase one's risk of stroke over time.

Risk factors for stroke include:

Heart disease
Older age
Smoking
Diabetes
High blood pressure
High blood cholesterol and lipids

There are two main types of stroke: ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs more commonly and is when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked. Blockages are caused by blood clots and built-up plaque (deposits of fat and cholesterol), which leads to atherosclerosis, a condition where the blood vessels narrow and harden. The resultant restricted blood flow may lead to an ischemic stroke by blocking essential oxygen to the brain, causing the heart to exert more effort to pump blood.

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in or around the brain ruptures. The burst vessel leaks blood into surrounding brain tissue, causing irreparable brain damage.

Hemorrhagic strokes are less common and may occur from head injuries, brain aneurysms, brain tumors, and bleeding disorders, amongst other conditions.

Both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes require immediate medical treatment. Medical intervention can prevent severe and life-threatening brain damage. Signs of stroke include:

-Disorientation or confusion

-Difficulty speaking

-Difficulty walking

-Impaired vision

-Weakness in the face, legs, or arms

-Severe headaches

When someone suspected of having a stroke reaches the hospital, the patient will usually receive a CT or other scan that provides an image of the brain. The scan results can reveal clotted or leaking blood in the brain. Physical exams, neurological exams, and blood tests may also be used to check for blood clotting and sugar. Treatment begins generally immediately if a stroke is detected.

Medical treatment for ischemic strokes includes a thrombolytic medicine which breaks up and disperses blood clots. This medicine can greatly improve stroke recovery and long-term health. However, the thrombolytic medicine must be administered as soon as possible to achieve these results. Other treatments for ischemic strokes are blood thinners and thrombectomy, a surgical procedure to remove a blood clot in the brain. Thrombectomy is performed by inserting a catheter (thin needle) into the artery to reach the blood clot and mechanically remove it. With the clot removed, normal blood flow to the brain resumes. Thrombectomy is typically performed at most six hours after a patient shows signs of a stroke.

Hemorrhagic strokes are treated with blood-saving medication and surgery. For a hemorrhagic stroke caused by the rupture of an aneurysm (blood vessel bulges), surgery to stem the bleeding aneurysm and vessel may be used. One surgical technique is stent-assisted coiling, which adds a stent (small wire-meshed tube) into the blood vessel to block the leaking opening of the aneurysm. A non-surgical procedure is endovascular coiling, where a catheter (thin, hollow needle) places a platinum wire coil at the spot of the aneurysm. The coil blocks bleeding and prevents the aneurysm from continuing to leak blood. These procedures are usually combined with blood-thickening medications. Blood transfusions may be administered if substantial blood loss has occurred.

Since stroke patients may have lost some essential functions while the blood flow to their brains was obstructed, both ischemic stroke and hemorrhage stroke patients may receive post-stroke rehabilitation to rebuild their physical and mental abilities. Some restorative treatments include occupational, physical, and speech therapy. Patients may also receive care from neurologists, who can assist patients in recovering certain brain functions and cognitive abilities, and rehabilitation psychologists, who may help patients with their emotional, behavioral, and cognitive recovery. Some stroke patients require lengthy rehabilitation and may never fully regain function, while others may recover more quickly. While the fastest recovery improvements are usually seen in the first three or four months, stroke rehabilitation can last for years.

If someone begins to show signs of stroke, contact emergency services and call 9-1-1 immediately since blood flow must be restored as soon as possible to help avoid significant brain damage. If an ambulance takes the person to the hospital, paramedics can initiate stroke treatment as soon as the patient enters the ambulance, allowing for more prompt medical intervention and care.

I came to see Dr. Kazil this past week for truly awful hemorrhoids and the pain they cause.  First of all thank you to the staff who are both incredibly professional and caring.  Truly they reflect so well on you and your nursing staff.  You came up with a potential non surgical solution as due to other factors I am not a good surgical candidate.  The treatment appears to be helping but even if it hadn’t your knowledge, expertise and wonderful bedside manner can’t be overstated.  A huge shoutout to your nurse as well as she presented with  all of those same attributes that you possess.  For those reading this post let me assure you I have had several very complex and serious health challenges and I have worked in health care as a patient advocate.  I have seen some of the best physicians in the country at places like John’s Hopkins, George Washington Hospital,  D.C  and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Kazil is among the very finest I have  ever seen, we are very fortunate to have her and her staff here on the  west coast of Florida.

Dr. Kazil is a magnificent surgeon! My surgery was for a pilonidal cyst excision. I felt incredibly secure with Dr. Kazil as my surgeon due to her wealth of knowledge and expertise. She showed great confidence in her skills and was very professional. Not only was she efficient, but she and her staff went above and beyond to make me feel safe and comfortable during my surgery since I had declined anesthesia. I cannot say enough how wonderful it is to be under the care of Dr. Kazil and her staff. They are absolute treasures! I am so appreciative of her work and would highly recommend her to anyone.

I had been going to another surgeon for a cyst that continued to get infected, was removed, then the scar continued to get infected until I switched to Dr. Kazil. She performed surgery and cleaned everything up, she was very informative as to everything step-by-step along the way. Any questions she answered and made me feel extremely at ease. Healing process was way faster than my original surgery and I am infection free!

I located Dr Kazil after some research on the internet.  After talking to her very professional and courteous office staff, I made an appointment to see Dr Kazil about surgery for an inguinal hernia.  The surgery was promptly scheduled and completed without any complications.  Recovery was as Dr Kazil described.  I would highly recommend her as a surgeon.

Run, don't walk, away from Dr. Jenna Kazil. Never step a foot in this place. She will waste your time and lots of money.  Now I know, after it is too late. She failed as a doctor, needs go back to school. Worst experience. I HATE myself everyday for trusting her. Highly Recommend find a different doctor.

I needed a Cholecystectomy (gall bladder surgery) and was in pain for several months.  Went to see 3 or 4 other surgeons before finding Dr. Kazil.  Never really felt comfortable with the others plus was worried about Covid and so kept putting it off.  Dr. Kazil was not like the others.  From the moment I walked in her office, I felt something different.  I was immediately welcomed by her friendly staff and every time I either spoke to anyone via phone or in person, it was always in a most professional and courteous way.  Dr. Kazil was so kind and took time to explain the surgery in great detail.  She also calmed my Covid fears.  I finally felt comfortable and felt like I was in good hands.  Dr. Kazil's knowledge is amazing and her bedside manner even more amazing.  You don't feel like you're just a number with Dr. Kazil and her staff.  They're very caring, accommodating and professional.  I would recommend Dr. Kazil to anyone considering surgery.  Thank you a thousand times over.

Dr. Kazil is an amazing, dedicated, caring person who puts her patients 100% first. She is willing to patiently listen and answer questions in a gentle, understanding manner. From being warmly greeted by her front office staff, Lauren and Achyut, to her kind and patient assistant, Elizabeth... you realize this practice is different. It's professional yet very personal.  My gallbladder surgery went perfectly... from our very first meeting to the final follow-up appointment. Willing to go the extra mile to make sure you get the best care possible, I totally trusted her decisions and would put my life in her very capable hands again! (I LOVE this doctor!!!) At 59 years old I was told my right Carotid was almost 100% blocked & that the left also had blockage.  My Primary Doctor told me to find a Vascular Surgeon for a second opinion.  
I found Dr. Jenna Kazil at Florida Surgical Clinic! My experience with Dr. Kazil was Amazing!  From her office staff & scheduling staff , all were fantastic people, very friendly and very professional. Dr. Kazil was matter of fact and to the point as to her plan of action for me. I knew from our conversations she was 100% committed to getting me healthy and knew exactly what she needed to do.
My Carotid endarterectomy surgery was scheduled within days of seeing Dr. Kazil. My incision was minimal and has healed amazingly fast.  I will be following up with Dr.Kazil to have the left Carotid unblocked, as soon as the hospitals reopen for surgery.

Dr. Kazil saw my brother for possible surgery due to years of Type 1 Diabetes.  I was driving up to see him, when she called me.  Since I was enroute, she suggested I stop by her office to discuss his case in detail.  She had a full  schedule yet made time to see me, and did not "rush" thru our meeting.
  She was concerned with Paul's overall health; he truly was not a good candidate for surgery.  She asked if anyone had suggested hospice.  No, but we were receptive.  She texted his dr to put in a hospice consult. He was admitted to hospice care.  While in hospice awaiting a nursing home bed, he declined VERY quickly and passed.
  If not for Dr  Kazil's compassion and honesty, he would have died alone, in a hospital bed...if he lived thru surgery.  She could have done the surgery and taken the money.  Her dedication to doing what's best for the INDIVIDUAL gave us time to spend with my brother.  Time to say I love you...time to say goodbye.

Dr. Kazil was able to get my brother in to be seen very quickly and schedule his gallbladder surgery. Very impressed with her caring and compassion while working with us. Staff was very responsive from start to finish. I would highly recommend. Competent and compassionate surgeon's are hard to find. A true blessing to our family.

I am 71 yers old and I had a lipoma for years that I never did anything about because I was fearful of surgery.  I found Dr. Kazil on the internet and made an appointment with her. Dr. Kazil was very kind, understanding, professional and supportive.   The surgery was painless the only post-surgery effect was being a little sore and having a little itching where the incision was made.  Dr. Kazil used glue over the incision (no staples or sutures!) that wore off in a few weeks.  If you are holding back getting the medical attention that you need because you are fearful of surgery or pain, I highly recommend considering seeing Dr. Kazil in her Bradenton or Sun City office.

In 2019, when I was referred to Dr. Kazil after an abnormal mammogram, I saw Dr. Kazil for a breast biopsy, lumpectomy, and finally, a mastectomy.
In my opinion, Dr. Kazil is an outstanding surgeon, who is straightforward, honest and compassionate. Not only is Dr. Kazil extremely knowledgeable, but her manner is good natured, and she presents with a down-to-earth common-sense approach. I found this combination of skill and kindness extremely reassuring.
Throughout this breast cancer experience, I feel that Dr. Kazil did everything she could make sure that I had the most comfortable and effective treatment possible. Not only did she fully and patiently discuss my treatment options, but she presented information about my surgeries in a way that I could understand. At all times, Dr. Kazil conveyed respect and was open to my questions and input as an active participant in my treatment. She supported my decisions about the options that she presented, and she made every effort to refer me to the best available resources. A real bonus was that Dr. Kazil also communicated promptly to messages and questions that I left on her patient portal.

I am currently a 22 year old female who needed a shoulder lipoma removed. Dr. Kazil arranged for my surgery about a week after the consultation and assured me that it was a simple procedure while still letting me know of the risks. Before the surgery, I requested that Dr. Kazil take a picture of the mass on the removal day and she did! Weird request, but that just goes to show how great she is! Overall, I had a great experience with Dr. Kazil as well the staff and I would highly recommend her as your future doctor/surgeon!

As everyone can relate to, it is very disarming, confusing and frightening when you have excruciating pain and don’t know the cause. That was me not too long ago. I ended up in the Emergency room and early indications was my gall bladder. The staff called in a surgeon to verify and determine next steps. I was very fortunate that Dr. Jenna Kazil was that surgeon. She was extremely professional in dealing with me but more importantly she did it with compassion and understanding. She took the time to explain what was going on and did it in simple terms so that I and my husband knew what was going on. With the next steps clearly outlined, we both felt very comfortable and a trust was building with her.  Even after the surgery, Dr. Kazil continued the care and compassion with the follow up hospital visits and the final checkup in her office. Dr. Kazil is one of the greatest doctors I have ever met. She removed my gallbladder and repaired a small hernia.  She is professional and extremely pleasant.  I was nervous to have surgery in general but the ease of having her as my doctor calmed any concern I had.  I would absolutely recommend her to anyone in need of a surgeon and am glad to have met her under the circumstance. I sought out Dr. Kazil after having suffered with a growth on my leg for 3 years. It was removed by a different surgeon 3 years ago and a sensory nerve was damaged, effectively leaving me with no feeling in my lower leg or foot. The growth returned and became quite painful. She was careful and methodical in her testing, making sure she did not do surgery that would result in additional lasting negative results. Dr. Kazil spent extra time during the surgery, not only removing the growth and scar tissue, but in correcting what nerve damage she could from the previous surgery. The growth is gone, the scar looks much better, and most importantly, I no longer have the shooting nerve pain I had after the previous surgery. I would recommend her highly.

Dr. Kazil is an incredibly thorough, personable and skilled surgeon. If you are nervous about meeting a new doctor, look no further! I’ve had terrible experiences with surgeons in the past, either shying away from my complex health or delivering a shockingly unpleasant bedside manner. Dr. Kazil made me feel 100% at ease within the first few minutes of meeting her, and she embraced the complexities of my medical history. She involves me in my care and values my input while simultaneously delivering the best course of action. She always explains the details of any procedure, no matter how minor or major, until I am comfortable and in full understanding. Dr. Kazil performed a cholecystectomy on me. Her office was great to work with. They were able to get me in right away and I had my surgery the same week. Dr. Kazil was very easy to talk to and really cared about how I was feeling. She answered my call at 9pm the night I had surgery because I was concerned and even called to check up on me after that even though she has infant twins. It is obvious that Dr. Kazil cares deeply for her patients and that she has a gift. I was told by other patients in the waiting room that they wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for Dr. Kazil and I believe she makes every patient feel as though they are her only patient.It is also great that I have never had a long wait at the office. They are good at getting you in at your appointment time. Our father had a series of strokes this past fall. Dr. Jenna Kazil ended up being the vascular surgeon recommended for his case and we will be forever grateful. 
She problem-solved with Dad’s team of doctors and eventually suggested that surgery was a risky, but best course of action. Dad’s case was serious and not clear-cut yet Dr. Kazil explained the medical information tactfully, without “sugar-coating” it so that our family could reach the best treatment decision.  
Prior to the operation, she came to visit Dad every day, even late in the evening after her other rounds, to check on his status and to answer any questions that any of us had. 
She worked hard during his long, tricky surgery and informed us about the progress as we waited.  She continued to follow up with him post-surgery in the hospital and now in her office as he continues to recover. 
Dr. Kazil combines a kind, patient bedside manner, the ability to deliver medical information in a way that a non-doctor can understand, with surgical knowledge and experience. She is a hard-working, caring, competent medical professional whom we highly recommend.

Jenna Kazil is an intelligent and efficient doctor. Even more important she is kind. She takes the time to explain what and why of a medical issue, then, what can be done for it.
I have had varicous veins for several years and the ache & discomfort finally was such that I sought relief beyond compression stockings. My primary care doctor recommended Dr. Kazil and I am so glad she did. 
Last month Dr. Kazil performed a vascular procedure on my left leg. The relief was amazing. I was out for my daily walk the next morning (albeit with those compression stockings for a week).

Dr. Kazil was wonderful! She was so easy to talk to. I get so nervous with any type of procedure, but she patiently & thoroughly explained everything to me that would be going on ( even drew me a little diagram :] )  My surgery went great, my scaring is minimal. Dr. Kazil has to be one of the easiest doctors to talk with. She speaks on your level, makes sure you understand what will be done and answers all questions. I was completely at ease with her performing my gall bladder removal. She even checked on me personally in the hospital quite late at night and a day before she should have been back to work. On May 15, 2017 I was diagnosed via an ultrasound with a 7.3CM aortic aneurysm. My initial reaction was panic. I was fortunate to have had an appointment scheduled for me by my primary care physician with Dr. Kazil on the following day, May 16.
During the initial meeting with Dr. Kazil, she was very patient with me and while acknowledging the seriousness of my condition, outlined for me the pros and cons of my condition from a surgical standpoint, maintaining throughout our discussion that she was quite confident she would be able to repair the aneurysm by inserting a stent through my groin instead of a more invasive open chest procedure. In order to further confirm her plan of action for me, she requested a cardiac evaluation to ensure that she would be able to proceed on her preferred course of treatment.
Considering this was a first visit, Dr. Kazil gave me a feeling of confidence going forward with her recommended treatment and by the time our visit was concluded, her office had contacted my primary care physician to schedule the cardiac evaluation and scheduled the stent procedure at Blake Medical Center for May 31. Very efficient and a great “bedside” demeanor from Dr. Kazil. This was not a 10-15 minute in and out visit to keep on her appointed schedule. Dr. Kazil spent as much time with me as was necessary to outline the issues, answer my questions satisfactorily and confidently propose the medical solution to my problem.
Procedure was performed on May 31 at Blake. Everything went as planned and after an evening at Blake Medical Center I was discharged on June 1. Had my follow up with Dr. Kazil on June 13 during which she examined the incision area, and prescribed further tests and exams to ensure that the stent is holding in place. No restrictions and I’m good to go! Many thanks to Dr. Kazil and her staff for exemplary care in treating my aneurysm.

Dr. Jenna Kazil and Peter (her office manager) at Florida Surgical Clinic were great. I was in a lot of pain and Dr. Kazil saw me right away and did my surgery the same day. Her skills and know-how are amazing. I went in this year for an appendectomy and had Dr. Kazil perform surgery.  She did a wonderful job at making me feel comfortable and understand what was going to happen.  I was very pleased as well with my small incision’s and how quick my surgery was over.  I believe because of her I felt much better and had a fast recovery! If I need any more surgery in the future I will definitely be calling Dr. Kazil again!
