I saw Grace Doctorow (I used to call her "doc doc," which I found hilarious at the time) for roughly five years when I was a teenager and only stopped working with her when I graduated high school in 2007. I was not an easy patient and found it super hard to open up. Regardless, she was lovely. Very sweet, gentle, containing, validating, and endlessly patient. She never made me feel badly when I missed sessions (even our last), and was a critical source of support and consistency throughout a really critical period in my life. I will always remember her eyes getting red when I was talking about losing my father; that meant so much to me. I also deeply appreciated that she never left me to flounder awkwardly in silence by myself, as many therapists at that time would do. She always helped me find a way to talk. I myself am now a psychotherapist (even a psychoanalyst) and consider her to be a significant reason why I went into this field. She remains a core model for how I do my own work. I still think of her often and am forever grateful for her care, kindness, and support when I really needed it. You couldn't find someone better. Thanks for everything, Grace.
