Dr. Chang was ruthless. My son required minimal NICU care (PO+NG feeds) and he insisted he would remain hospitalized until his due date. I argued with this, as I really wanted my son home ASAP. He threatened to take me to court to try to gain custody of my son if I persisted in asking to have my son home sooner, and he insisted on inserting an NG tube again even though my son required no NG feeds that day. He persisted in telling me my son required an additional 4 weeks in the hospital until he suddenly told me my son was going home the very next day. Obviously I was thrilled, but he caused significant undue stress and did not allow me and my family to adequately plan for discharge. For example, I was unable to arrange to meet with lactation prior to his discharge and it was difficult to arrange for a pediatrician visit on zero notice. My husband was unable to be off of work for his discharge. He told me stories about other patients when I asked for a better prediction of when my son would be discharged (unrelated stories, like about a baby who was losing weight, when my son had already gained past his birthweight at one week of age). He personally made my son's week in the NICU unnecessarily difficult, and I would not trust him to provide compassionate or competent care to anyone's child. Remember, even when your child is in the NICU, you have the right to refuse any treatment you deem unnecessary or any procedure that hasn't been adequately explained to you. He will make you feel like you have ot either listen to him or go to court. He is wrong.
