I've been a patient of Dr. J's for over 20 years. I've never found the office staff to be very friendly (sometimes even rude) nor have I been overly impressed with the doctor, but I had overlooked those things since, with two exceptions, I've only had to see him once a year in order to get a prescription filled. I'm almost 80 years old and have developed severe pain in my hands, arms, shoulders and sometimes in my legs and hips. I suspect arthritis but it had reached the point where I need to be sure and to see if there is some help besides ibuprofen and a heating pad. At my scheduled appointment yesterday, I was told I needed to pay $80.00 up front. I'm on Medicare and have Aetna supplemental and have NEVER had to pay upfront. I've always been billed and after Medicare paid their share I'd pay mine. Never had a problem, always paid (sometimes took a couple or three months, but ALWAYS paid and was never 'dunned'). I was told this is new office policy. I told the receptionist that had I known that I would have made the appointment for next week, after my social security check was deposited. She knew I was in pain and that I was broke (end of the month) and my record should have told her that I was good for the money. She wouldn't budge so I rescheduled for next week and left. I just called to cancel that appointment and I will not be going back. I've contemplated this move for a while but since I've always been in relatively good health it just was't that important - or so I thought. I'm now looking for another doctor.
