My ex and I went to Carolyn on/off for marriage and individual counseling over a span of about three years. I don't feel she listened very well, as she was often vague with her spoken assessments. Our issues were not getting resolved. We were just going in circles. Needless to say, I filed for divorce. During the legal process I requested a treatment summary of my own individual sessions. Carolyn (apparently) had almost no records, no notes, and could not or would not formulate an accurate summary. What she gave me didn't even have the correct timeframe of service. My own sessions were greatly about my struggles coping with my ex's affair and persistent neglect and emotional abuse. The summary stated nothing about these issues. As with Carolyn's spoken assessments, it was very vague. Coincidently, Carolyn continued counseling my ex after our separation, which was during the time I requested the summary. I filed a complaint with the state board, but to my knowledge nothing ever came of it. After the divorce I started with a new counselor who helped me through the process of abuse recovery. She helped me gain the strength to fight for full custody of my children, who were also being emotionally abused. It was a long and difficult process, and it could have been avoided if Carolyn had followed the simple guidelines of documenting her sessions and providing an accurate and truthful treatment summary to her client.
