Seeing Carolyn Prince for therapy for his brain injury made my significant other's behavior much, much worse. On top of his brain injury and all the problems it causes for him, he's extremely abusive toward me, and so with his permission, I described the abusive behavior to Carolyn Prince when he started treatment. I asked if she could help sort out any ways that his brain injury might be playing into these, so we could figure out how to deal with them appropriately. Carolyn Prince's response was to tell me that she didn’t believe me because he told her a different story, and I shouldn't contact her again. She also let him know that this was her belief. Now he has escalated the abuse. Carolyn Prince spent therapy time encouraging him to do things that will only make his condition worse (like enrolling in graduate school on top of a full-time job and ignoring the serious fatigue that is already causing him to miss work, holidays, and other activities). If she taught him any strategies for managing his symptoms, he doesn't use them. He no longer even tries to work on his behavior. He now snaps almost immediately into rage when things aren't going his way, refuses to listen to anything at all that he doesn’t want to hear, and doesn't even pretend to take responsibility for the harm he causes anymore. Her "treatment" gave him permission to unleash every abusive impulse he has, and I can't even speak anymore without fear of what he'll say, do, or threaten. Carolyn Prince didn't design a good plan of treatment, understand different perspectives on a situation, or build a working relationship with him so he'd want to do the work. Even if you or your loved one isn't like my significant other, you have to ask yourself, how could a psychologist without these skills possibly be helpful to you?
