I glanced at the other review on this site, because I was shocked at the 1 star rating. It's a long diatribe about billing & service problems with the FACILITY - Thrive. 1) The provider (Angela Alarcon in this case) has no control over the business practices of the facility that employs her. 2) Angela is not even at Thrive. I saw her this year at BSW in Manor. She was recommended by my previous PCP, as he is moving to a different clinic in BSW. I had no negative experiences with her or the clinic staff. Everyone has always been helpful and friendly. When issues have arisen with BSW, they are resolved easily. The care was good. She is informative, patient, warm, even funny.
I came in for a yearly physical which is covered at 100% by insurance. When I proceeded to get blood work in the lab, I was told I have to pay for some of the blood work. I asked the office to confirm with my insurance because this should be covered at 100%. They replied with “we don’t call insurance.” So I had to do the work for them, playing liaison between Thrive and my insurance. I had my insurance on speaker asking if these labs are covered. To which they stated the coding is incorrect. When I asked Thrive for the correct 5 digit code that the insurance needs, not only did they provide the wrong 4 digit code several times, they also refused to look for the correct 5 digit code. At this point, I have been waiting for 1.5 hours, then was asked to leave the office while I figure out this by myself. No one would help me. No one would answer my questions regarding this blood work. My doctor was nowhere to be found. I expressed that I refuse to move forward until this matter is settled so as to not receive a surprise bill after the fact. It has now been 2 hours and I still have no correct answers from Thrive to get these labs approved by insurance. I requested to speak to my doctor immediately, as she still has not checked in on me. A male doctor whom I do not know appeared asking what the problem is. I explained and his response is that the insurance companies and US healthcare are the problem. After going back and forth again, with Thrive providing the wrong code, that male doctor finally provided a generic code for the blood work which made the lab 100% covered. It only took two hours. I left the office crying because of the incompetence and lack of care the people at Thrive showed me. My doctor never followed up with me nor she did she even ask if everything was okay that day. A week later, I received a letter that my doctor is terminating our relationship and sent me a bill!!!! I called to ask why I was billed as this annual physical should have been covered at 100%. They replied “did you talk about other things in the visit? Like your nails and how you almost fainted?” I replied “Angela, my doctor asked ‘is there anything else?’ So yes I answered her question.” Just like in every single doctor visit, when a doctor asks "is there anything else", I will reply accordingly. Had I known she would bill me for answering a simple question, I would never say anything at all. I no longer trust doctors as this experience has tainted my views in healthcare providers. Rather than having my best interest in mind, Angela, my doctor, blindsided me by asking follow up questions without disclosing that I will be billed should I answer her questions. I have never visited a doctor where they asked “is there anything else?” and was subsequently charged extra for answering the question. This is unethical medical practice, tricking your patients into answering questions then charging your patients without prior knowledge. I was really hopeful this relationship would work out and I would have a trustworthy healthcare provider who cares about me as a patient. Now I am left scarred from Thrive and never wanting to see another doctor again.
