I visited Dr. Struss for a bunion. When I asked if anyone in the practice performed Lapiplasty, she said no, they all performed the surgery in the same more traditional way. Although Dr. Struss seemed annoyed when I asked her specific questions regarding the surgery and had an abrupt bedside manner, given the fact that she was relatively young and new to the practice, I just chalked it up to inexperience.  I should have asked for a 2nd opinion, but trusted the fact that she knew what she was doing and was with what I thought was a reputable practice. I went ahead with the surgery to relieve the pain. Throughout the entire process, I was left to manage my care on my own with little to no assistance from the practice. Even arranging for a post op boot was difficult. At no time was I made aware of the pain involved - I was simply told I would walk out of surgery and be walking in my regular shoes within 6 weeks. I was not given any advice on pain management (other than a photo copied handout) or about follow-up physical therapy. I had to discover it on my own. Communication between Martin Foot and Ankle and my primary care physician was non-existent until I requested to have my files transferred over. After 6 weeks, I was in no way able to wear regular shoes. Even at the 1 year mark, I had lost all sensation in the top of my foot, had developed metatarsalgia, my bunion had come back, and the pins/screws in my foot were causing inflammation. When I requested a follow up visit to address these issues, I was told it just happens sometimes and given a shot to relieve the inflammation. My foot hurts more now than before the surgery. To cap it all off, I later discovered that one of the Podiatrists at Martin Foot & Ankle does indeed perform the Lapiplasty procedure. It was the worst medical experience I have ever had.
