"Dr. Boggess performed emergency jaw surgery on my 7 year old daughter. Her jaw was a closed fracture to her mandible. My mom, husband and I were not aware of the severity of the jaw injury due to the blood in her mouth. She hit a pole on her go cart. After the ambulance ride to Fargo from Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Dr. Boggess was one of the doctors waiting in the emergency room for a team care meeting at Sanford Health when we arrived. He worked with the neurologist to get surgery cleared and scheduled. He successfully performed this around her c-spine collar. Dr. Boggess had her ready to go to surgery in about 10 minutes once he knew he was fine doing this with the collar on. No kidding, pretty awesome team member Dr. Boggess, she was in trouble and he brought her out of that part of it, thankfully sir. She was in the hospital from 7/9-7/16 2021 and he checked on her while she was in the hospital every day, if I remember correctly. He also had to wire her jaw shut. She is very blessed little girl. Dr. Boggess has an amazing bedside manner and made every interaction with us the most friendly and efficient experience. He explained what was going on and what was going to happen in such a precise way, we did not have many questions at all. I remember finding out after the surgery that the spot I had thought was just a missing tooth, was where the mandible fracture was. I am really thankful Dr. Boggess. You helped get her started on her road back to normal. God Bless you and yours."

What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty providing surgical care for the mouth and jaw. It is unusual in that it is a hybrid specialty combining the professional education of both dentists and medical doctors. The path to becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or simply "oral surgeon", begins with graduating from dental school. The dentist then attends a surgical residency in a hospital, learning general surgical techniques alongside other physicians.

While many routine oral issues can be treated by a dentist, there are some that require specialized surgical care. Some of the procedures performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons include:

Removing wisdom teeth
Dental implants
Corrective surgery for facial deformities
Repair of facial trauma
Cleft lip or cleft palate surgery
TMJ surgery
Orthognathic surgery (jaw alignment)
Sleep apnea surgery

Some of these procedures are also performed by otolaryngologists or ENTs. There is quite a bit of overlap between the two specialties, and in many cases both will be qualified to perform a specific surgery. In general, oral surgeons are more likely to perform surgeries related to the mouth and jaw, such as wisdom tooth removal or TMJ surgery; whereas ENTs are more likely to handle cancers. However, areas of specialization are truly dependent on the individual physician.

One unusually convenient fact about oral and maxillofacial surgeons is that they are highly trained in the use of sedation and anesthesia, more so than any other doctors except anesthesiologists. This means that they are able to perform surgeries such as the removal of wisdom teeth on an outpatient basis in their office, without the need for an additional anesthesiologist on staff.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons combine surgical expertise with their knowledge of dentistry to provide serious care for the structures of the jaw and face.
