"My teenage child was assigned Shannon Hargrove-Scott as his therapist. My child saw her a few days after their friend attempted suicide. They were already struggling with typical anxiety and academic and social issues, on top of being a Black child in America, before their friend's attempted suicide. By time my child logged into meet with Shannon Hargrove-Scott for their very first session, my child was distraught, desperate for a calming, objective, professional, listening ear. Instead, my child got a judgmental, unprofessional, authoritative and unethical Shannon Hargrove-Scott. My child said they were scared and anxious and seconds away from tears when they logged in for the session. Then, Shannon Hargrove-Scott opened the call and said, "Hi, have you ever had thoughts to harm yourself?" No introduction. No welcome. The session went down hill from there. Over the next 50 or so minutes, Shannon Hargrove-Scott partially listened to my child talk but mostly condemned and judged my child and told my child what they should and should not do in their life going forward. My child is too polite to hang up on her, which is what I wish they would have done. Instead they unintentionally internalized the disparaging and unwarranted criticisms and judgements that she continued to throw at them. My child is intelligent and wise enough to know she was terribly wrong and violated the counseling code of ethics in her assessment and vocal judgments of my child, in her directives towards my child, and in her insistence that my child do what she said to do. However, my child is also a young impressionable teenager who was in desperate need of support not judgement. Shannon Hargrove-Scott does not need to counsel anyone if this is any indication of how she works with any of her clients, especially young black teenagers who have enough challenges in their lives without being condemned by a therapist who is supposed to be helping them.
