"Today was my first visit to Dr. Wood and it was wonderful. From the minute I walked into the clinic I was greeted and taken care of by efficient, friendly, professionals. I did not have to wait. I was in and out in less than an hour, and I had blood drawn. After meeting with the nurse and the nurse practitioner I talked with Dr. Wood. She checked me out and let me know that she would send refills for all the medications I needed. Then Dr. Wood let me know about their Web Site where I can check on tests and other pertinent information. This was one of the best Dr. Visits I've experienced. I came home and changed all my insurance information to Dr. Wood as my primary care physician. This will be a great place to go for medical care going forward."

What is Family Medicine?

Currently in medical care in the United States, there are four main primary care specialties: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics. Internal medicine is primary care for adults, pediatrics is primary care for children and infants, and geriatrics is primary care for seniors. This allows family medicine doctors to develop long-term relationships with their patients and to understand how their patients' role in the family affects their health. They can provide check-ups, immunizations, screening services, gynecological exams and obstetric care, routine health care, and health counseling. When more specialized care is needed, a family medicine doctor can refer their patients to appropriate specialists. They can become educators and advocates for their patients in the sometimes overwhelming health care system.

As health care changes in this country, family medicine is a growing specialty for families and individuals who are seeking more personalized health care and a more personal relationship with their physician.
